Description

Our workshop 'Maps for BLR Bus Stops' is a hands-on workshop. Participants will get to use our tools (the GTFS data finder, route diagram generator, and the design system) to create maps for their own bus stop(s).

Most of the work we do at Bengawalk is about making the city of Bengaluru more accessible with design, tech and storytelling. Through this workshop, we want people to be part of this journey by making bus maps and testing our design system. The goal isn't just to visualize data but also understand how it shapes the way people navigate public systems.

Outcome: At the end of the workshop, everyone will have created 1-2 bus stop maps!

The structure of the workshop is as follows: 30min - Introduction & Presentation 2hr - Workshop 1hr - Lunch Break 1hr - Review and Q&A

The activities planned are:

  1. Using GTFS to filter and categorise the bus routes from your bus stop.
  2. Using our route diagram generator to get a base drawing of the route map.
  3. Using Figma to tweak the design, refine hierarchy, labels, legibility etc to make it usable.
  4. Review session to see everyone's maps side-by-side.
  5. Reflections and Q&A Of course, we will give demos and guidance at every step.

How it relates to conversations in data viz, especially for community: This workshop connects to larger data viz conversations around public infrastructure, open data, usability, and human-centered systems. Public transport data is rarely accessible. Raw GTFS feeds are complex, and without filtering, categorisation, and design, they remain a mystery to commuters. Data visualization is essential for civic design: how can we convert data into clear, legible visual systems that directly impact mobility?

Intended Audience This workshop is designed for everybody. No prior experience with GTFS or design is required.
