The Map of the Mandate: Visualizing India’s Delimitation

Electoral boundaries in most democracies get redrawn periodically, to ensure political representation is in agreement with population and demographic changes. In India, delimitation of constituencies has been shaped by regional, social and political complexities. I explore visually the historical delimitation of constituencies across multiple political scales through maps from ECI over the decades. Also, I run simulations of possible redistricting, to speculate a political realignment with the availability of high resolution electoral and demographic data after the upcoming census. I intend to use this space to deliberate with the community on democracy and data, through a visual journey of India’s electoral geographies.
