From Data Viz to UX: A Career Reality Check

Description

This talk is about a career pattern in data visualization that we rarely acknowledge openly: many data viz practitioners don’t end up doing “pure” data visualization work in the industry. Instead, they drift into UX roles. This observation comes from years of hiring, mentoring, and working with designers across experience levels.

The core idea of this talk is a reality check. I’ll explore why this drift happens, what skills from data visualization translate well into UX, and what gets lost along the way. I’ll challenge the assumption that data viz and UX are parallel, equally available career paths, and instead argue that data visualization often functions as a gateway skill rather than a long-term destination role in most product organizations.

The talk also looks forward. As AI tools increasingly automate visualization generation, chart selection, and interaction patterns, many traditional data visualization skills are becoming commoditized. Knowing which chart to use will matter less than knowing why it works, when it fails, and how to shape meaning, narrative, and clarity. In this future, designers will differentiate themselves not through tool mastery, but through taste, judgment, visual hierarchy, and the ability to frame data in context.

This topic matters deeply to me because I work at the intersection of design, data, and complex product systems, and I regularly engage with students and early-career designers who are trying to make sense of where data visualization fits in the real world.

The talk is structured in three parts. First, a grounded look at career realities and patterns I’ve observed. Second, an exploration of the skills, traits, and mindsets that help data viz practitioners succeed and evolve, including curiosity, fast domain learning, and comfort with ambiguity. Third, a call to action for leaders and organizations on how to create more meaningful opportunities for data visualization designers beyond defaulting them into UX roles.

The intended audience includes data visualization students, early-career designers, UX practitioners, and design leaders. Key takeaways include a clearer picture of career paths, guidance on which skills compound over time, and concrete ideas for expanding the role and impact of data visualization in modern product teams.
